Alfredo making jump to K&N Series

Anthony Alfredo announced today that he will be joining the reigning NASCAR K&N East Champions, MDM Motorsports for the 2018 season. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series, which includes the East and the West divisions, is the top step in NASCAR’s developmental ladder before drivers progress to the three-national NASCAR Series, the Camping World Truck Series, the Xfinity Series, and the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. “MDM is a great team with proven success at the next level. I would like to thank them for allowing me to become a part of their team. I am grateful for this opportunity and plan to make the most of it.” said Alfredo.

Anthony Alfredo is an 18-year-old race driver from Connecticut who has emerged as one of the brightest prospects for future NASCAR Cup Series stardom. Anthony was selected to drive for Dale Earnhardt, Jr.’s JR Motorsports (JRM) team in the Late Model division of the ultra-competitive CARS Tour in 2017, and finished a close second in the championship to his much more experienced teammate, Josh Berry. Anthony topped off the season by winning the Southeast Limited Last Model Pro Division, driving for Lee Faulk Racing and Development.

Alfredo is also driving under the Ranier Racing Development program with top NASCAR talent scout Lorin Ranier. Anthony will be teaming up with Crew Chief and former Goody’s Dash Series Champion Robert Huffman.  “For as little racing experience as he (Anthony) has, I think he has done a great job in his career thus far,” said Huffman. “I’m looking forward to working with him this year.  Finishing second in the CARS Tour Championship by just a few points to someone like Josh Berry shows he already has the ability to run with top competition.”

“I’m really excited about joining MDM Motorsports this year to race for the K&N East Championship.  I am looking forward to working with all of the great individuals that are a part of their team and cannot wait to get to New Smyrna Speedway for our first race on February 11, 2019.” said Alfredo.

Mayer to JRM in 2018

Sam Mayer has been named to JR Motorsports’ championship-winning Late Model program for 2018. The 14-year-old native of Franklin, Wis. will take the seat of the team’s second entry for the season, hoping to continue the run of success the team has had over the past several years.

Mayer, son of former IndyCar and road racing star Scott Mayer, will join 2017 CARS Late Model Stock Car Series champion Josh Berry as a teammate for 2018. The younger Mayer, who began racing go-karts at the age of 4, ended his first Late Model campaign in 2017 on the strength of three victories and 13 top-10 finishes. Mayer ended the season with a fifth-place run in the prestigious Myrtle Beach 400, a race that Berry won to cap his season.

“We’re very happy to have a young driver of Sam’s caliber join us here at JR Motorsports,” said L.W. Miller, director of motorsports at JRM. “He’s accomplished a lot in his career already, including against the top Late Model talent in the Southeast, and he definitely has all the qualities we look for on the track and off it.”

The breakout 2017 season for Mayer also included a full slate of US Legend Car Series events, and the young driver won the US Legend Car Winter Heat Championship, the Summer Shootout and US Legend Car Asphalt Nationals.

“It will be a really exciting experience, to know that I’m with a top NASCAR team and a top Late Model team,” Mayer said. “I hope to be really competitive and have lots of fun while doing it. I’m confident with the way the team is going to treat me and the car, and excited about seeing what we can do together and what we can accomplish.”

JR Motorsports is coming off a two-year stretch in which its Late Models have won 26 races in 97 starts. Berry has claimed 21 race victories in that span, while drivers Anthony Alfredo, Christian Eckes and Scott Bishop combined to add five wins to the total.

Now in its 17th year of competition, the JRM Late Model program has scored 40 victories in the last three seasons and track championships in 2012 and 2014. Berry also won the CARS Late Model Stock Car owner championship in 2016 and the driver title in 2017.

LMSC Engine Combos to downsize in 2019

NASCAR issued a statement to all Home Track members stating that ALL Dodge, Chevy and Ford built motors will no longer be legal under NASCAR sanctioning starting in the 2019 season. This comes as to a relief for most who have been going off of hearsay for the last few months on the future of LMSC engine combos. 

The only engine combinations that will be legal under NASCAR sanctioning will be the new Chevrolet Built “upgrade” motor which most of us know now as the new SPEC motor. Also, the Ford SR347, the Harrington Enforcer engine and lastly the 604 GM Crate motor.

Rouse to compete for BMR in 2018

Bill McAnally Racing announced today that Cole Rouse will join BMR to compete in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series in 2018.

The 20-year-old driver from Fort Smith, Arkansas will contend for the championship in the West division of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and race in select events in the East division, driving BMR’s No. 99 NAPA Filters Toyota Camry.

This marks the return of Rouse to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, where he registered four top-five and 12 top-10 finishes while finishing eighth in the championship standings as a rookie in 2016.

This past season, he raced for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the CARS Super Late Model Tour, where he captured a championship. He also made starts in the ARCA Midwest Tour, the ARCA CRA Super Series, the ARCA Racing Series, the Southern Super Series, and the JEGS/CRA All-Star Tour in 2017.

“It’s great to have Cole join the BMR team,” said BMR President Bill McAnally. “We’ve watched his development and with the potential he’s displayed, we anticipate great results for BMR’s partners and fans. We look forward to chasing a championship together.

“Cole comes to us with a lot of racing experience,” McAnally said. “That should be beneficial in getting a quick start to the 2018 season.

“We will work hard to continue the success we’ve had in recent years with the NAPA Filters Toyota and I know Cole will do a great job on and off the track in representing BMR and our partners,” McAnally said.

Rouse said he is eager to join the BMR team and return to the series.

“I’m excited to be with BMR next year in the NAPA Filters Toyota,” Rouse said. “Bill does a great job of getting the right people to make the program thrive. BMR was the most dominant team in the West this past year and I think we will be in the coming year, too.

“My goal for the year is to win the championship in the West,” he said. “I think we have a really good shot at it.”

Rouse began his racing career at the age of 14, competing in mini-cup cars before advancing to late model competition in 2013. He captured attention in 2015 when he led a race-high 145 laps of the All-American 400 at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, before mechanical trouble left him to finish fifth.

BMR captured its third straight title in 2017 and eighth K&N West championship overall – a record for the series and the NASCAR Regional Touring level.

Up and Down the ranks with Cale Gale

Cale Gale may be a household name for some, but not all. To your average spectator, Saturday’s Truck race at Martinsville is just another race where a rich kid can buy a seat and try to compete at a short track. For Cale Gale, this time, it’s something different. Gale hasn’t sat in the seat of a Camping World Truck since the 2013 season, since then he has raced in just about everything BUT the NASCAR’s top three series.

Cale Gale got the call from Shane Huffman, MDM Motorsports and his longtime partner Rheem about a month ago asking him if he’d like to pilot the #99 machine around the paperclip for the Fall Martinsville race. Of course, Cale said yes. But let’s rewind a bit to the 2012 NCWTS Season where Cale had a full-time ride with ESR with Rheem has his exclusive sponsor. He ran well that season, it wasn’t his first shot in the NWCTS, but, it was his first full-time season. In the final event of 2012 Cale and crew chief Jerry Baxter pulled off an amazing strategy call, which earned Cale his first and last NCWTS victory. Cale Gale beat Kyle Busch in his own playground, at his own game that night. And, unfortunately even with an emotional victory lane speech and an excellent showing of talent on the track, Gale remained in limbo for the 2013 season.

During the next calendar year, Cale competed almost full time at the famed Bowman Gray Stadium running Sportsman, and winning races. While doing this he also had the birth of his first child, Camber Gale. Cale continued to crew chief and mentor Brandon Jones in ARCA and K&N, while juggling a newborn and helping his father Bubba run their business, Gale Force Suspension Management. He started a couple NCWTS races near the end of the year and had great showings, finishing thirteenth at Kentucky, sixth at Phoenix and tenth at Homestead. But even with having an entire year off, hopping in and showing he can still compete at NASCAR’s highest level, nothing came of it.

Since that 2013 season, Cale has run everything from a 602 Super Limited all the way to a NASCAR Whelen Modified. I had a chance to ask him what exactly is the learning curve from driving all different types of race cars compared to a NASCAR Truck, “A tour type modified does everything it’s supposed to do. Got big ole tires, a real low center of gravity, nice and wide tread width, lightweight, and plenty of motor.  A truck is more sluggish. Higher center of gravity, heavier, smaller tires.” But this task is nothing Cale can’t handle, he assured me. During these off years, Cale was hired by Roush Fenway Racing as a shock-man, which as many of you know has Gale written all over it. But recently Cale has been kind of the five-tool player of the RFR shop doing everything from simulations to testing with the team at the track.

Gale told me at this point in his career, he hasn’t raced for points in much of anything since 2003. With that being said, he would love the opportunity to compete for a championship in whatever it may be that he races next. He has pondered the idea of possibly running for a championship at the famed quarter mile, Bowman Gray. But, like most things in his racing career, this isn’t set in stone. He had the chance to tell me it’s “truly humbling and unbelievable to be the guy that can still get that call or text in today’s time.” I asked him if he exceeded expectations this weekend, did he believe anything could come of this opportunity. He simply said, “I do have a slight hope that if I do my job that is possible.” And in today’s racing world, that’s all you need…..one opportunity.

Huffman to compete in Fall Brawl at Hickory

Off the heels of announcing his second career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start at the end of the month, Landon Huffman will strap-in behind the wheel of his Landon Huffman Racing (LHR) Toyota this weekend at Hickory Motor Speedway for the Cosmo Motors Fall Brawl presented by Calico Coatings.
“Last time out with my car we finished third without any practice,” said Landon. “We made a few changes and I am excited to go 200 laps this weekend. Two big weekends ahead of me and I am enjoying what the good lord gives me.”
The No.75 LHR Toyota Camry Late Model Stock will be adorned by the teams’ sponsors: Wrench Rags, Catawba Valley Reclamation, Huss Bail Bonds, and Sigs Tire.
Huffman, 21-years-old, hopes to conquer the “Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars” for a third time this season when the Bojangles Late Model Stock division takes to the track on Saturday.
