Sanders prevails in Race #1 of CMSC Series | Results

Dillon, SC – The 2019 Race season officially begin this past Sunday as Dillon Motor Speedway hosted it’s Annual “New Year’s Bash.” The Bash is primarily recognized as the “Daytona 500” for Street Stock racers which draws between 40 to 50 of the nation’s best year after year. This year the $2,500 to Win Street Stock feature would be won by Gary Ledbetter Jr. who dominated by leading all 109 Laps.

The New Year’s Bash also includes racing in the Challenger, Mini-Stock, UCAR and Banger divisions. The Mini-Stock portion of the event was hosted by the Carolina Mini-Stock Challenge Series presented by Accent Imaging. Robert Strmiska, Junior Snow, Michael Rouse, Shane Canipe, and Brandon Clements made up the Top 5 in qualifying.

The chaos began early in the Mini-Stock feature. Going into turn 1 on the first lap saw Pole Sitter and Race Leader get sideways in front of the field which slotted him back in the 5th or 6th position as the field raced down the backstretch. This was not the end of Strmiska’s problems.

On lap 5 the #09 of Canipe, who was leading at the time, lost power coming out of turn 4. This caused the field to stack up. Strimska and the #16 of Michael Tucker made contact which resulted in both cars slamming the inside wall near the front strech pit exit. There were 5 cars in total involved in this early incident.

After the problems of Strmiska and Canipe, the lead was handed over to the #51 of Snow. Snow would lead a handful of laps before turning the lead over to Michael Rouse. Snow later had mechanical issues and had to pull off. After all of the issues and a handful of restarts AJ Sanders had made his way up to the Top 3. Michael Rouse would hold the lead over AJ Sanders and Brandon Clements for multiple laps before he expirenced problems as well. Rouse’s #53 Racer Walsh Co. Mini Stock let out a large puff of smoke as he led the field into turn one. He developed engine issues which forced him to pull off as well.

As the race winded down, AJ Sanders would lead over Clements and 2018 Series Champion, Kris Hetu. Hetu was behind the wheel of the Red #01 that is normally piloted by his son, Aiden. Sanders was able to pull away from Clements and the rest of the field on long runs. There were multiple cautions and restarts towards the end of the race that allowed the field to bunch back up and have another shot at gaining positions.

In the end, Sanders was able to hold of Clements and Hetu to pick up the first win of the 2019 Carolina Mini-Stock Challenge Series season.
